NYC Parking & Camera Ticket Data Report

Everything on this page is computed directly from the public NYC Open Data dataset “Open Parking and Camera Violations” (~148 million rows): how many tickets New York City issues each year, what they cost, which violations get dismissed at hearings — and how much fine money likely goes uncontested. Every chart lists its source, coverage and sample size. Journalists and bloggers are welcome to reuse any number or chart with a link back to this page.

Most people never dispute

Of the 16 101 553 tickets issued in 2025, only 2 254 908 (14.0%) have reached a decided hearing so far — yet across all decided hearings on record, 26.2% ended not guilty. The vast majority of tickets are simply paid without anyone checking whether they could be beaten.

$259,7M
est. fines that could have been waived (2025, see note)

Estimate methodology: 13 846 645 tickets issued in 2025 have no decided hearing. If those tickets had been dismissed at the historical all-hearings rate of 26.2%, at the 2025 average fine of $72 per ticket, that fine money would have been waived. This is an illustrative estimate, not a measured amount: tickets that are disputed are not a random sample, some undecided tickets are still pending, and past group rates do not predict individual outcomes.
