Car booted in NYC? What it costs, how to remove it, and your options

Direct answer: A sheriff/marshal boot comes off the same day you pay your judgment debt — online at nycbootpay.com or by phone at (646) 517-1000 — and you enter the release code into the boot's keypad yourself. NYC boots vehicles that owe $350 or more in parking or camera tickets that are in judgment. If you don't pay within about two business days, the vehicle is towed. Here is exactly what you'll pay, how the release works, the 24-hour boot-return rule, and the payment plan that can get the boot off without paying the full balance upfront.

Why was my car booted — and which boot is it?

Two different agencies boot cars in NYC, and the process depends on which one got you:

  • Sheriff/marshal boot (Department of Finance) — a green clamp with a keypad. Applied because the vehicle owes $350 or more in parking or camera violation judgment debt. This is by far the most common boot.
  • NYPD boot or Barnacle — yellow or blue clamp without a keypad, or an orange windshield device (the Barnacle), applied to illegally parked vehicles (mostly in Manhattan). Instructions are on a QR sticker on the windshield; the removal fee is $185, and if you don't pay within 2 hours, the car is towed.

Everything below is about the sheriff/marshal judgment boot. For NYPD boots, follow the QR sticker — and note you do not have to pay the triggering ticket itself to get the car back; you still have 30 days to pay or dispute it.

What does a boot actually cost?

To release a judgment boot you must pay the full judgment debt plus the enforcement fees, per the DOF booting FAQ:

ChargeAmount
All judgment tickets on the plateYour full balance (fines + penalties + interest)
Boot fee$142
Sheriff's/marshal's execution fee$80
Poundage fee5% of all fines, penalties, and interest
Late boot return (after 24 hours)$25 per day, up to $500
Damaged or lost boot$500 replacement, possible prosecution

On a $400 judgment balance, the extras alone add roughly $242 — which is why acting before the boot (paying, disputing, or a payment plan) is always cheaper.

How to remove the boot, step by step

  • Pay online at nycbootpay.com or by phone at (646) 517-1000 (Republic Immobilization Services, 24/7). You get a release code immediately after paying in full.
  • Enter the code into the keypad on the boot to unlock it. The boot weighs about 16 pounds; if you can't remove it, a support officer is sent to help within 2–4 hours.
  • Return the boot within 24 hours to one of the listed return locations, or you'll owe $25 per day (up to $500).
  • Paying in person (cash, money order, cashier's check at a DOF business center) works too, but you'll wait for an assisted release instead of getting a code.

Never try to force the boot off. A damaged boot costs $500 to replace, you can be prosecuted for property destruction, and you'll likely ruin your tire.

Can't pay it all? The booted-vehicle payment plan

You don't have to pay 100% of the judgment debt to get the boot released. Republic Immobilization Services offers a payment plan for booted or towed vehicles — enroll at nycbootpay.com or (646) 517-1000:

  • 50% down payment on the total judgment debt, with the balance paid within 6 months (minimum $50/month; 30 days total if you owe $50–$500).
  • Boot, tow, and related fees must still be paid in full upfront — the plan covers the ticket debt only.
  • Your license, registration, and insurance must all be valid, and every judgment ticket on the plate must be included.
  • Want to dispute any of the tickets at a hearing? You must do it before the plan begins.

What happens if you don't pay — and your hearing rights

  • Tow: an unpaid judgment boot becomes a tow after about 2 business days (sometimes immediately). Then finding and redeeming the car adds tow and storage fees.
  • Auction: impounded vehicles are typically sold about two weeks after being towed — sometimes sooner.
  • Hearing rights: you can still request a hearing after a boot or impound if the judgment is less than one year old. If the car is impounded and you haven't paid, request the hearing before the vehicle is sold — visit a DOF business center or ask for an administrative attorney to hold the sale.
  • If your tickets are dismissed at that hearing and the car hasn't been sold, you get it back — and booting/towing fees are refunded for dismissed tickets.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get a boot off your car in NYC?

For a sheriff/marshal judgment boot: your full judgment debt plus a $142 boot fee, an $80 execution fee, and a 5% poundage fee on all fines, penalties, and interest. For an NYPD boot or Barnacle, the removal fee is $185. Pay online at nycbootpay.com or by phone at (646) 517-1000 for judgment boots.

How long can a boot stay on your car in NYC before it's towed?

About two business days (48 hours). If the judgment debt and fees aren't paid by then, the vehicle is towed to a pound, adding tow and storage fees. In some circumstances the vehicle can be towed immediately. NYPD-booted vehicles are towed after just 2 hours if unpaid.

Can I remove a NYC boot myself without paying?

No. The boot only unlocks with a release code you receive after paying. Damaging or removing it without a code costs a $500 replacement fee and can lead to criminal prosecution for property destruction — and usually wrecks your tire. After paying, you do remove it yourself with the keypad code and must return it within 24 hours ($25/day late fee, up to $500).

Is there a payment plan to get a boot off in NYC?

Yes. The booted/towed vehicle payment plan through Republic Immobilization Services (nycbootpay.com, 646-517-1000) requires a 50% down payment on judgment debt, with the rest paid over up to 6 months. Boot and tow fees must be paid in full, and your license, registration, and insurance must be valid.
