Ticket in judgment: what it means — and the one-year window to undo it

• Interest accrues on the judgment amount on top of the late penalties.
• Collections: the debt can be sent to a collection agency, and the city can pursue asset seizure.
• Booting and towing: at $350+ of judgment debt, the vehicle can be booted, then towed roughly 48 hours later.
• Registration consequences: New York State DMV can block or suspend a vehicle registration renewal over unanswered NYC parking tickets.
• Judgments remain enforceable for 8 years — waiting it out is a losing strategy (details).

DOF grants a hearing after judgment only if all of the following hold:

• The vehicle was registered in your name;
• The judgment was entered less than one year ago;
• You show excusable neglect — a concrete reason you could not respond before the default (hospitalization, never received the notices at a properly updated address, active-duty deployment…);
• You present a substantial defense to the violation itself — the same defenses that win regular hearings, like a defective summons or a signage error.

File the Request for Hearing After Judgment form (online, in the Pay or Dispute app, or by mail). If granted, a judge hears the defense — with no adjournments. If denied, the judgment amount stands and is due.

• Hearings are not granted for tickets in judgment for more than one year — the merits are closed.
• A payment plan stops booting/towing while you pay in installments.
• Check the total in our lookup or the city's — penalties and interest often exceed the base fine, so confirm what the number is before paying.
• If the judgment was entered against the wrong person or plate, contact DOF — clerical identity errors are handled outside the one-year merits rule.
